Gold filled jewelry parts are composed of actual deep layers of heavy 14 karat gold, which are pressure bonded to another metal base. "Gold filled" is not to be confused with "Gold plated", since gold filled components literally have 100% more gold than gold plated ones. Gold filled jewelry is much more valuable than gold plated pieces, and is tarnish resistant. 14 karat gold is composed of approximately 60% real gold and 40% other metals.
